She gets the “medication crazies” for a while each time I give them. Very restless, some whining and whimpering but eventually she does go to sleep for a few hours. When she wakes up she is usually “more normal” and … just before it is time for more meds…my sweet, old Freckles comes back and we share bunches of kisses and hugs. She is very suspicious of any food I give her. I am sure that she thinks there is some med hidden in it. But, as I said, we don’t hide stuff anymore… she is just more accepting if I put it in the very back of her mouth and allow her to swallow while I stroke her neck and blow on her nose. I have to make sure to get it W-A-Y in the back and to the side or the pill WILL come back. She is really getting around when we go for a “backyard break”. No doubt she is going to try to exceed her limits if I let her. She is so eager to get “out and about”. My other dog – Scruffy – tried to play with her on her way back into the house. Freckles is still way too unsteady to play with her. When I first got Freckles, I decided to walk her in the neighborhood every day….and we go to the park on Saturday and Sunday. When I got Scruffy (someone just kicked her out…my mom found her on her doorstep) we continued as three. Since Scruffy is NOT on meds, etc she is waiting to go walk everyday. I think she has gotten the message now that it will be a while before we go walking again. But our day is comming!
Gosh, I’m so sorry Freckles is a pill hater. My Izzy almost got named “Piggy” and with good reason! Not only does she sound like a lil pig when sniffing the ground, SHE WILL EAT ANYTHING!!! I’ve put her meds in cheese, soft food, canned pumpkin … all gone! She had he left front leg amputated on Friday and isn’t quite “off like a shot” like yours when outside to potty but is still doing really well, especially for an old lady. I hope Freckles starts to correlate the pills with no pain – might make it easier!
Good Morning! Our family dog is going in today for her amputation of the left front leg due to the bone cancer that has developed. How was Freckles when you had brought her home the day after?
Aww Scruffy should get extra treats for being so patient. Together the three of you are going to be great medicine for faster healing. Well that and the efficient pilling techniques. Nice work!
Yeah, you all three be taking your walkies in no time. I cant wait to see the video! I agree, Scruffy gets extra treats!
I know the Tramadol is just awful tasting. Once they know you’re trying to hide it they’ll turn their cute noses up everytime! Yucky tasting stuff! I do hope Freckles gets some yummy treat after the pill to sorta’ get rid of the aftertaste. She’s such a ggood girl!
It’s just wonderful to hear how well she’s doing. She’ll get her balance and make the necessary “muscle” adjustments pretty quickly. Supposedly it takes a good two weeks to recover from the surgerynitself. About thirty days to work out the mobility and balance issues. Freckles is eight on target!
Keep on keepin’ on Freckles! We’re cheering for you!!
Hugs to all!
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!
PS To Kendall. If you go over to the “forums” and start a post on your specifics, we’ll be glad to help out. We’d kove to here more about your sweet pup!
Every dog is different and every recovery is different. But everyone here ep as first hand experience that, hopefully, can benefit you. Sending best wishes and looking forward to hearing from you!
